The St. Petersburg City Council is looking at doing a study on the land Tropicana Field sits on.

Council member Jim Kennedy says he hopes the study will convince the Tampa Bay Rays to stay in downtown St. Petersburg.

The Urban Land Institute Study will establish a vision for development with or without a new stadium on the land. It'll also show how many residential units and commercial units can be built and will estimate how much a new stadium will cost with and without a retractable roof.

Kennedy says the Rays are willing to pay for half of the study.

"To show the Rays that what they have here is something that they don’t have an opportunity for anywhere else," Kennedy said. "And that what we have here can generate the funding to support a major league baseball stadium and the construction of it.”

Now the city council can only recommend the study to the administration. It’s going to be up to Mayor Rick Kriseman whether or not to move forward.

This is the first time the city council has discussed a possible study.
