A high-speed crash on Florida Avenue in Tampa overnight left a gaping hole in the front of a local church.

The crash happened at the Praise Cathedral at 5103 North Florida Avenue.

“We don’t know what to do, said Pastor Pat Hall of Praise Cathedral. "We just need a miracle.”

According to Tampa police, 44-year-old Bruce Powers was driving drunk on southbound Florida Avenue when he crossed the center line, crashing into a car in the opposite lanes, pushing that car and his own into the front of the church, which is along the roadway.

The church is left to pick up the pieces.

“I was like, 'oh my God,' I thought they were starting to do some construction on it or something, but then I got to looking at it and realized someone ran into the building," said parishioner Rocky Reynolds.

Officials said there does not appear to be any structural damage to the building but the crash did leave a gaping hole, broken glass and cement blocks strewn on the sidewalk, street and in the church.

Church officials say they were already looking for funding to repair the rundown church and now the crash sets them even further back in the repairs.

The area has been the scene of multiple crashes recently.

In January, a drunk driver smashed into the patio of the Independent Cafe, which is blocks away. And in January, another car crashed into the Woman's Empowerment Center, which is right across the street from the church.
