Dontae Morris is on trial facing his latest accusation of murder.

The jury has the case. They began deliberations about 4 p.m.

Morris is accused of fatally shooting Derek Anderson outside of his home in May 2010. State prosecutors say he used the same gun to kill Anderson as he did to kill two Tampa police officers, just more than a month later.

Morris was convicted and sentenced to death in 2013 for the 2010 murders of officers David Curtis and Jeffery Kocab. He was also given a life sentence for the murder of May 2010 murder of Rodney Jones. Morris is also charged with the June 2010 murder of Harold Wright, but that trial hasn’t happened yet.

Morris’ defense lawyers say there is no physical evidence linking him to Anderson’s death. If convicted, Morris could face life in prison, or a third death sentence.

Sunday, a Hillsborough County Detention Deputy testified that he overheard Dontae Morris give a jail cell confession in November 2011.

“During that time when you were sitting there, watching him and listening, did you hear him make the following statement, ‘I repent for killing'” asked State Prosecutor Scott Harmon.

“Yes,” Dep. Ruben Clemente said.

The jurors are sequestered for this trial and heard testimony from state witnesses over the weekend.
