Deputies on Monday arrested a man they say drove up to the front door of the Hernando County Detention Center and, after first refusing to move his vehicle, drove it through the landscaping and into a flagpole.

Michael Lee Roberts was taken to the ground, arrested and charged with criminal mischief and resisting an officer with violence.

After first refusing to move the car from the front sidewalk, Roberts backed it down the walkway and hit a bench, deputies say. He then accelerated forward with his wheels turned to the right and ran through the landscaping, over some curbing and across the lawn.

He then turned the vehicle around and headed back toward the building, in the grass and took aim at a deputy's patrol car. At the last instant, Roberts turned to the left, continued in a full circle and struck a flag pole, according to deputies.
