The human remains of a man found in someone's backyard in Lakeland have been identified.

Corey Norvell found the remains of Gary Greenfield, 54, when he was doing yard work on the 1200 block of Windsong Drive in Lakeland. Greenfield lived in the house behind where Norvell located him.

An autopsy was conducted, and the results are pending toxicology.

Norvell said at first he thought he spotted a huge rock on the ground.

“I started looking further into it and I actually saw the whole body,” he said. “I saw ribs and the clothes and there was like a knife lying next to him.”

And now investigators want to know how that body got there.

“The investigators came to the door and wanted to know if we had seen anything or heard anything or if we had security cameras. I suppose they wanted to look for footage or suspicious activity,” said Larry Beckley, who lives nearby.

Beckley’s wife, Becky said the discovery is scary and unsettling.

“Anytime there’s violence in your neighborhood you don’t want to believe that it could happen here. But it is happening here,” she said.

As authorities are trying to piece together what happened, the people in the South Lakeland neighborhood are trying to get over the shock of Norvell’s startling discovery.
