A 31-year-old Hernando County man picked the wrong place to park his vehicle Monday.

He then picked an even worse place to take a joyride.

According to authorities, Michael Roberts drove around in circles on the front lawn of the Hernando County Detention Center on Spring Hill Drive.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Roberts was erratically driving the SUV in sharp circles in front of the jail before crashing into a flagpole. After the SUV stopped, about six detention deputies pulled Roberts out of the vehicle and arrested him.

Officials said the incident happened after Roberts initially drove right up to the door of the building at about 7 p.m. Sergeant Steven Wegner told Roberts he could not park that close to the door.

When Roberts refused to move his vehicle, Wegner escorted him out of the building and, along with deputies, told Roberts to move his vehicle.

Roberts got into his vehicle and began backing down the walkway.

Roberts then hit the bench and was unable to back up any further. He then went forward and turned right and drove across the lawn and through landscaping.

At one point, according to deputies, Roberts took aim at a cruiser. At the last moment, Roberts turned left and hit the flag pole, officials said.

Roberts stepped out of the car, was taken to the ground, and placed in handcuffs.

Roberts has been charged with criminal mischief and two counts of resisting arrest without violence.
