A Largo man has been arrested and charged with suffocating his infant daughter.

According to Largo police, Stephen Johnson was arrested Tuesday night after detectives conducted a follow up interview regarding the death of 8-week-old Leah Johnson.

Authorities said Johnson, 20, told them he found the baby face down and unresponsive on the couch July 24 after he woke up from taking a nap with her.

She was taken to a hospital where she was declared dead.

Johnson is accused of forcing the child's face into his chest and shoulder area until she stopped breathing.

Neighbor Nared John said she was home when rescue crews responded to the apartment Johnson's shares with the baby's mother.

"The ambulance came and they rushed in the house and all we heard was like screaming and crying and it was very tragic,” John said.

Johnson has been charged with first-degree murder and remains in the Pinellas County Jail. He is being held without bail.

As for baby Leah's mother, police say Jennifer Carpenter wasn't home at the time of her daughter's death and is cooperating fully with police. She is not expected to face any charges.
