Dozens of residents gathered in the Easton Park subdivision in New Tampa to protest a planned road going through their neighborhood.

Carrying signs and chanting "No road here", they marched from the community pool to the area where they said developers are planning to build a 4-lane road called the K-Bar Parkway.

"It scares the bejesus out of me," said Dale Clark who lives in the area.

Clark said the road would serve as an East-West connector between Kinnan and Morris Bridge Road. He said the speed limit would be 45 miles-per-hour.

Clark said his biggest concern is for the safety of children who live in the neighborhood.

"Every kid that lives on one side of where the road will be will literally have to ride their bike or walk through a 4 lane road to get to the pool, the park, the bus stop or any of their friends’ houses who live on the other side," said Clark.

Residents said developers have told them the planned route is the best option for protecting the wetlands.

In spite of that, residents said they'd like to see both the developers and the City of Tampa look for another way.

"We provided alternatives to the City Council. We're asking for a 2nd opinion of the environmental study that was done back in 2002 roughly. I believe there could be other possibilities if we get a 2nd study done," said Chad Pillai who lives in the area.

"We're not opposed to them bringing an East-West connector in here. We just want it to go around our community, not through it," said Clark.

The city council is expected to take up the issue on August 6th.
