Polk County deputies need help finding a shooting suspect on the run.

Deputies said Danny Coleman Thompson Jr., 39, is wanted for the shooting of two people in Mulberry Thursday.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the shooting occurred around 2:22 p.m. at 2360 Old Highway 60.

Deputies said Thompson, who is an ex-employee fired 15 months ago, arrived at the MES-GCI Construction facility and started firing at employees.

Officials said Thompson came to the facility looking for his former boss.

"He was told that Chad was at lunch, so Danny got in his truck and left," said Steve Lester, Polk County Sheriff's Office. "Approximately 2:20 [p.m.], that same day today, Chad came back from lunch and noticed [Thompson] behind him in the truck. Chad went into the business and got two employees to bring them out as witnesses."

Brady Herstine was working at an auto body shop just doors away from the shooting.

"At first, we didn't think too much about it, until the lady next door came running over and said that somebody was shooting in the back," Herstine said. "So at that point we kinda started pulling doors shut and try to figure out what's going on."

Two people were taken to Lakeland Regional Health Center with what are described as non-life threatening injuries.

Thompson is armed with a handgun and considered dangerous. He is wanted for attempted first-degree murder and armed burglary. Deputies believe he is still in the Polk County area.

Thompson is described as a light-skinned man, about 6'2" tall with brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a cap, t-shirt and blue jeans. Deputies believe he is driving a 2006 Ford F-150 Super Crew Cab with Florida tag 212-6PD.

His last known address was Springwoods Lane in Lakeland.

Deputies are camped out in the neighborhood where Thompson was living.

Neighbors said he is well-known in the neighborhood, and his father lived there for a while.

One of Thompson's friends, Jonathan Mercer said he's been friends with Thompson since they were kids.

"We used to skateboard," Mercer said. "We used to have a ramp back here behind our house and we used to skateboard together."

Mercer said Thompson recently injured his back and was having some issues with work, but he was shocked to hear what happened.

"My mother told me that there's a bunch of cops in the driveway and the street and that Danny had shot some people, and they are looking for him," Mercer said.

Mercer said Thompson was a good neighbor who never showed any violent tendencies.

"Everybody has their little downfalls, but would I ever think that, you know, as I know Danny personally, would take it to extremes likes this? I wouldn't have ever thought this," Mercer said. "I never even thought he would have guns."

The sheriff's office isn't saying whether they've been able to contact any of Thompson's family members or whether they are helping with the search.

If you know anything about Thompson's whereabouts, you are asked to call Heartland Crimestoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477).
