Two teenagers have died after Friday morning's crash off an access road along the Courtney Campbell Causeway.

According to Tampa police, the car went through a guardrail and into the water.

Police have identified the victims as 18-year-old Rishi Martinez and 14-year-old Gyzelle Diaz, both of Tampa. Naeve Duarte, 14, visiting from California, survived the crash.

Juan Ocasio was fishing nearby and said he swam out to help Duarte, who was the only one to make it out of the car.  Ocasio said he tried to reach the other teens, but couldn’t get the car door open.

“I tried, I tried, I tried.  I cut my hands,” Ocasio said.

Authorities received the call just after 5:30 a.m. and responded to the scene.  Upon arrival, two Tampa police officers dove into the water in an attempt to rescue Martinez and Diaz.

Fire rescue personnel and Clearwater Marine Unit divers were finally able to pull Martinez and Diaz out of the vehicle. All three were rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital. Martinez and Diaz were later pronounced dead.

Outside Martinez’s home in Tampa, his father Eduardo Deleon broke down into tears.

“He had plans to go to college,” Deleon said.  “And do good stuff.”

Officials have not said who was driving the car. The crash remains under investigation. Tampa police detectives say alcohol may be a factor in the crash.
