Golf clubs and girl power. The two may not seem like they go hand and hand, but this year’s Polk County Amateur Golf Championship shows how the two worlds collide.

With golfers raising money for organizations like Girls Inc. in Winter Haven.

“To have this event in the summer helps tremendously because the financial drain is so huge,” said Girls Inc of Winter Haven program director Mickey Wright.

And what better way to spend a summer day than on the golf course? Famed Golfer Andy Bean even got in on the action, emphasizing the importance of giving back to young people.

“Down the road, the next generation, they’re going to benefit from what these guys are out here doing today,” Bean said. “But they’re also competing to win the Polk County amateur. And I tell you what: With some of the names that have been on there, that’s a good trophy to go after.”

The golfing tournament at the Lone Palm Golf Club will also benefit the Citrus Center Boys and Girls Club, and the First Tee of Lakeland.

“The impact probably, I would say, is academic,” Wright said.

Success in the classroom with help from the golf course. There are more than 100 amateur golfers participated at this years.
