A historic landmark in Lutz is getting a small facelift with the help of a 13-year-old student.

Sam Crawford is making a new sign for the Old Lutz School as part of his Eagle Scout project.

"I wanted to do something that I could look back on and remember that I built that," Crawford said.

Built in 1927, the Lutz school is the oldest public building in the city. It's on the National Registry of Historic Places, but the school doesn't have a sign. It's something community members say it needs to relay important information and events to residents.

Crawford is a few years ahead of the game. He hasn't even started high school, but he is beginning his Eagle Scout project.

It's full circle for the soon-to-be ninth grade student, who attended school at Lutz Elementary, just yards away from the Old Lutz School.

He is going through the permit process first, which is taking longer than he thought because of the building's historic status.

"We’re going to try our best to match the building," he said. "It's going to help them out a lot to communicate with the community."

Crawford will be following in his father, Donald's footsteps. He became an Eagle Scout in high school, and is excited to help his son with the project.

"He’ll be able to drive by here for years to come to see there’s my project, there’s my sign," Crawford said. "And it's still functional and serving the community."

"It's a pretty difficult project," Sam Crawford said. "I’m just going to remember all the challenges I faced. It's going to be awesome to say, 'I did that.'"

He is hoping construction will begin within the year.
