Residents in parts of Hernando County are keeping a close eye on the Withlacoochee River. It's at flood stage and yards and roads are underwater with more rain in the forecast.

Over the past week Shawn Lyons has watched his backyard disappear under a few feet of water. The Withlacoochee River is on the rise.

"I don't know when it is going to quit or if it is going to quit," Lyons said. "I don't know, yeah it is starting to get scary."

The river hit flood stage a few days ago and neighborhoods along the Withlacoochee in eastern Hernando are getting wet. Lyons has had enough, so he's going to move his family to higher ground.

"Yeah, had enough of that," he said. "Enough of the water."

Riverdale Park is halfway underwater as levels continue to rise.

We found Phil Moss in his backyard trying his luck fishing. He said over the past few days the water has been coming up fast.

"It honestly comes up about a foot a day," he said. "I'll get up in the morning and when I come out I'll see a new wet spot of grass and then by the afternoon, that spot is underwater."

More rain is in the forecast so at this point, we'll just have to wait and see what the Withlacoochee does next.

The river is forecast to level out over the next few days and then start to slowly recede, but that forecast has been changing.

Sandbags are available at the Ridge Manor Community Center and the Hernando County Department of Public Works.
