A bicyclist was struck and killed on U.S. 92 in Auburndale early Sunday, authorities said.

The cyclist, who was not carrying identification and has not been identified, was riding in the middle of the inside eastbound lane around 6 a.m. when he was struck by a 2005 Nissan, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Nissan, Michael Keith Porter, 45, of Winter Haven, said he saw the bicyclist at the last instant and attempted to swerve into the median to avoid him. The right front of the Nissan hit the back of the bicycle, and the Nissan came to rest in the grass, about 100 feet from the point of impact, deputies said.

No other information has been released.
