A Lake Hamilton man's attempt at avoiding arrest backfired when he gave officers the name of someone who was also wanted for arrest, Winter Haven police say.

Police responded Wednesday night to a call about loud music at 4225 Vista Del Lago Dr. When they arrived, they found Daruis Devonte McClain, 22, sitting in a white Chevy Impala with loud music coming from the car.

The officer asked McClain for identification, and McClain said he didn't have it on him. The officer then asked for his name, date of birth and Social Security number, so McClain gave the officer the name of Dequan Gunter and a 1993 birth date, police said. He also gave a Social Security number to the officer.

The officer checked the Social Security number, which came back as belonging to a white man born in 1989, police said.

The officer then checked the name and birth date McClain provided, and it came back with a warrant for the arrest of Dequan Gunter out of Putnam County.

Police said McClain ultimately admitted to giving his brother's name, but he didn't know his brother had a warrant for his arrest.

When police ran another check on McClain's true identity, they learned he was on felony probation for introducing contraband into a detention facility.

McClain was arrested on charges of giving false identification to law enforcement and violation of probation.
