Police say a woman died early Sunday morning after she was hit by a suspected drunk driver in St. Petersburg.

Jennifer Lee Miller, 46, was crossing the 2300 block of Central Avenue with a group of pedestrians at about 3 a.m. At the same time, police say a 62-year-old man was driving a 1997 Ford Ranger east on Central Avenue.

Police said the driver turned his attention away from the road for a moment and failed to see the pedestrians. When he looked back at the road, he saw the pedestrians and swerved left in an attempt to avoid them.

The front of his truck hit Miller, throwing her onto the hood of the vehicle and then to the road, police said.

Miller was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, where she was declared dead.

Police say impairment is suspected on the part of the driver, and that the investigation is ongoing pending the results of the toxicology report.
