Nearly a month after unprecedented rainfall in the Bay area, a popular section of the Upper Tampa Bay Trail remains closed.

The Wilsky Trailhead was washed out by flooding. It's the first time that section of the trail has seen a gaping hole in its path since Hurricane Charlie.

Hillsborough County's Regional Parks Coordinator said they have a plan to repair the damage.

"There's quite a bit of water that flows across the trail, so what we're going to do is put a drainage system in, to help the trail from being washed out," said Tina Russo, Regional Parks Coordinator.

The repairs are estimated to cost $15,000. Russo said they were able to find the money within the Public Works budget.

County officials are hoping the Wilsky Trailhead is back open for bikers, runners and walkers in the next 30 days.

The flooding in early August also delayed the open of the newest section of the Upper Tampa Bay Trail.

The Lutz Lake Fern Road Trailhead was supposed to open Aug. 7 to connect the Upper Tampa Bay and Suncoast trails.

The rain caused delays with the construction process. Russo said ditch and drainage work is needed before the Trailhead can open.

County officials have not set a new date for the ribbon cutting, but they're expecting the new section of the trail to be ready sometime in the fall.
