As both drivers approached the light at Gandy Boulevard and the light changed to red, the driver of the Cadillac stopped abruptly, officials said. Deputy Lundy was unable to stop and his Chevy Tahoe struck the rear of the Cadillac.

The driver of the Cadillac, identified as 24-year-old Yorgo Papagiani, was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Deputy Lundy was also transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities said Papagiani showed signs of impairment and refused to submit to a blood test at the hospital.

He was later charged with DUI, driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana and refusal to submit to blood test.

The case remains under investigation.
