Bill Tyndall looks over the lake, watching the rising sun as it glistens over the water.

The World War II veteran was out fishing Friday morning. He knows it might be the last time he drops his line.

"My last time," he said. "Last time."

Bill is 90 years old and home with hospice care. He told his wife, Carol that he wanted to go fishing one last time.

"That smile just crossed his face when he said, 'fishing, yeah fishing, there's nothing like dropping a line in the water,'" Carol said. "And I knew that's what he had to do."

Carol reached out to the JW Mitchell High School ROTC program to help. Bill is in a wheelchair, and Carol couldn't get him over the hill and up the steps to his favorite fishing spot alone.

ROTC Commander Steve Okun said it was the least he and his cadets could do for the veteran, who was an airman who flew with the Berlin Airlift.

"He's a veteran and he served his country," Okun said. "Now it's time to give back to him for everything that he's done for us."

Bill fished for 20 minutes. He caught a gar. A few minutes later, he caught a bass.

"He's got another one!" Carol said. "Go Bill, go!"

He pulled back and reeled in the bass toward the shore. A cadet grabbed the fish and showed it to Bill.

"That's a lovely fish," Bill said.

He looked at the fish, released it back to the lake, and bowed his head.
