Deputies on Sunday night arrested a driver they say refused to pull over for a traffic stop, crashed into a vehicle carrying a family of three, and ran from the scene in St. Petersburg.

Reginald Thompson, 29, of St. Petersburg ran a stop sign on 47th Street at 30th Avenue N around 6:30 p.m. and wouldn't pull over when a deputy tried to stop him, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.

The deputy didn't pursue Thompson's Chevrolet Impala, but when Thompson tried to turn right onto 46th Street, he crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a Toyota Rav4, deputies say.

A husband and wife in the Toyota, Christopher and Nichole Chapman, both 23 of St. Petersburg, were transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with non-life-threatening injuries. A 3-year-old child was not injured.

Thompson and three passengers ran from the crash scene, but deputies caught Thompson, Tasered him and arrested him, according to the sheriff's office.

Thompson was charged with resisting arrest, fleeing to elude, felony possession of crack cocaine, possession of hydromorphone and marijuana, driving with a suspended or revoked license and leaving the scene of a crash with injuries.

The three passengers were not located.
