Some Winter Haven residents would like so-called railroad quiet zones near the CSX logistics center.

The logistics center has brought a lot of extra train traffic. Trains blow their loud horns as a safety requirement at crossings.

Some of the crossings are next to large subdivisions.

"Two or three in the morning. What's that?” said Brenda Mitchell, of being startled out of sleep by the train horns.

Mitchell would like Polk County and Winter Haven to get together on the quiet zone concept. Under that concept, safety equipment including extra crossing arms would be installed. That would allow trains to pass by without blowing their horns.

Diane Wicker lives right next to some tracks. She supports the quiet zone concept.

"It's just the horns are so loud,” Wicker said.

Getting quiet zones is a complicated process that involves several private and government agencies. The process can take years.

Polk County manager Jim Freeman said has instructed his staff to study the issue.
