A Lakeland woman is facing a slew of charges after police say she attempted to steal more than $1,000 of goods from Walmart and later tried to escape police custody at an area hospital.

According to officers, 37-year-old Amber Adkins was taken into custody at the north Lakeland Wal-Mart store at 5800 Highway 98 North Monday afternoon.

Officials said Adkins was observed concealing store items in backpacks while shopping.

Store officials said she used knives to open packages while in the store and bagged about $1,300 worth of goods in the self-checkout area without paying for them.

Store security and Polk County Sheriff's detectives detained Adkins when she tried to leave. When they did, they discovered she had two handguns (one in her dress and another in a backpack).

While officials were interviewing her, Adkins complained of a medical issue and she was later transported to Lakeland Regional Health Center for treatment. While at LRHC, Adkins attempted to leave the hospital to avoid arrest, authorities said.

During her attempted escape, Adkins kicked a Lakeland police officer, authorities said.

Adkins was charged with grand theft, two counts of carrying a concealed firearm, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, resisting officer without violence, resisting officer with violence and battery on law enforcement officer.

During the investigation, Adkins told detectives she receives approximately $3,000 monthly in federal assistance.
