A smoke shop clerk in Tampa was seriously injured Tuesday night when he was shot during an attempted robbery.

According to Tampa police, a suspect attempted to rob Tony's Smoke Shop, located at 1815 W. Waters Avenue. Officials say a man walked into the store just after 9 p.m., pulled out a handgun and, at some point, began firing. The gunman then ran off.

Police said the clerk, 41-year-old Nicanor Solar, was shot in the upper body. He ran across the street to a Citgo gas station, where he collapsed in the parking lot, police said.

Solar was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he had emergency surgery Tuesday night. He is listed in serious condition.

Police are trying to locate anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the shooting. Officials have not said if the store has any surveillance equipment.

The suspect is described as a man ranging from 20 to 30 years old with a light complexion and approximately 150 pounds and 5-feet-6 to 5-feet-8.
