One person was seriously injured in a chain reaction crash in Winter Haven Wednesday afternoon.

Police said around 12:50 p.m., 81-year-old Gloria Farina of Winter Haven was in a line of vehicles facing north, stopped at the light at First Street South and Central Avenue East.

Police said 58-year-old Charles Evans, of Auburndale, was traveling northbound and had a medical episode, crashing his 2003 Ford F150 pickup into the back of the line of vehicles and causing a chain reaction.

The truck impacted the back of a 2010 Lincoln MKX driven by 71-year-old Kenneth Irven, of Winter Haven, which in turn crashed into the back of a 2007 Ford Escape driven by 65-year-old Paul Schopke, of Winter Haven. Schopke's vehicle then struck the rear of Farina's vehicle.

Police said Evans was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown into the windshield. He was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Health with injuries to his head. He was listed in serious condition.

Irven was taken by ambulance to Winter Haven Hospital for minor injuries. Both Schopke and Farina were uninjured.

The roadway was shut down for approximately two hours. The crash continues to be investigated.
