A 17-year-old suspect in a fatal shooting in Clearwater is in custody.

The shooting happened at about 8 p.m. Thursday in a home in the 1400 block of Hamlet Avenue.

According to Clearwater police, an officer on patrol witnessed a commotion at the house. When she went to the house to investigate, she found Davtara G. Grayson, 36, of Tampa, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Investigators say the suspect and Grayson knew each other, and that the shooting wasn't random. They said it appears as though the suspect, who lived at the home, and the victim, who did not live at the home, began arguing when the altercation turned violent.

Police said the suspect had fled the scene after the shooting, but officers searched the area and found him hiding in a ditch within an hour.

The gun used in the shooting was also found, police said. Police say the gun was stolen from an unlocked vehicle in Madeira Beach on June 11.

"That aspect of the case is a reminder that people should always lock their vehicles and properly secure their weapons," officials said in the media release.

The 17-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held at a local juvenile detention facility. We are not releasing the suspect's identity as it is not yet known whether he will be charged as an adult.
