A group of Pinellas County veterans are taking to the streets in an effort to help heal other disabled vets.

Project Hero Pinellas is a long distance bike riding group. They’re raising money so 14 of their members can take part in the first annual Army-Navy Challenge on September 26 -- a 450 mile cycling event from West Point to Annapolis.

Members say it’s more than just a bike ride, it’s therapy for combat wounded vets.

“After my injury in the Army in 2002, I just lock myself in the house,” said veteran Pam Kelly, who’s a quadriplegic. “It (cycling) will open your eyes. It’ll get you out in the sunshine, breathing fresh air and it will enlighten you and heal you.”

As part of the group’s fund raising efforts, Project Hero Pinellas is hosting a charity Poker Ride on September 12 at the American Legion Post 252 in Seminole.
