The Tampa City Council unanimously agreed Thursday to raise yearly stormwater fees from $36 to $82.

It is the first raise of the city's stormwater maintenance assessment since 2005.

The move comes after a summer of record rainfall and resulting flooding that overloaded the city's drainage system.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, the proceeds of the increase will go to sweeping streets more often, cleaning out ditches and pipes more often and unpluging water outfalls emptying into Tampa Bay every five years instead of every 15.

The charges will mostly impact homeowners with medium-sized houses. Residents with smaller homes will pay less while those who own larger homes will pay more.

In October, the council will discuss another proposal: A second "improvement assessment" to fund $250 million in improvements to Tampa's aging drainage system.

If approved, the total stormwater fees could add up to $180 a year for residents by 2017.
