The investigation continues after Tampa police say a clerk shot a man who was trying to rob a store Monday afternoon.

Officers said a man walked into the Hope Convenience Store, located at 4002 22nd Street North, at 3:13 p.m. He was armed with a knife and threatened the clerk while demanding money.

Investigators said the clerk had a gun behind the counter and shot the suspect in the head.

The clerk's brother, Meras Safieth, said it was self-defense.

"My brother, he had to do what he had to do and I know my brother is a hard-working man and earns an honest living," said Safieth.

There was a customer in the store when the shooting happened. The customer wasn't injured and police said that person is backing up the clerk's story.

The suspect, identified as Anthone Bryant, 22, was taken to Tampa General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The clerk left the scene, visibly shaken up.

"My family is all worried about me. I thank God I'm safe," said Safieh.

Family members said the clerk's wife is expecting twins and they are grateful he's OK.

"My brother is safe," Safieh said. "Really, that's like I won the Powerball so thank you God for his protection."
