A new report could save the Hillsborough County School District more than $100 million.

  • Consultants hired to review Hillsborough school spending
  • They recommended more than $100 million in cutbacks
  • Gibson Consulting Group cost $818,000

The 'Phase II: Operational Efficiency Audit' is the second analysis completed by the Gibson Consulting Group. The consultants have listed dozens of cost-saving recommendations for the district, from updating the technology used and switching to LED light bulbs to reducing positions and re-evaluating class sizes.

During a workshop Tuesday, school board members took a look at the latest report and discussed the recommendations.

One cost-saving measure school leaders are considering would end courtesy busing for some students. High schoolers could be some of the first to see the service go.

"It's like trying to close Pandora's box, giving the service for many years, and now we may have to take something away," school board member Melissa Snively said. "That's going to be uncomfortable for a lot of people."

The school district is paying Gibson Consulting Group $818,000 for their analysis.

Along with the recommendations, the consultants have also taken a look at maintenance within the district. They found most of the buildings are old and in poor condition. According to the report, many of the buildings need to be repaired or replaced.

The consultants will return with a third report at the beginning of 2017.

Meanwhile, the school district has added a YouTube video on its website to better communicate the changes being considered.
