If you still own one of the much-maligned Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, you won't be able to take it on an airplane in the U.S.

The U.S. Department of Transportation, along with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration announced the ban Friday.

The phone cannot be carried onto a plane or packed with checked baggage. They cannot be sent as air cargo, either.

The ban takes effect at noon Saturday.

"We recognize that banning these phones from airlines will inconvenience some passengers, but the safety of all those aboard an aircraft must take priority,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said.

“We are taking this additional step because even one fire incident in-flight poses a high risk of severe personal injury and puts many lives at risk," he said.

There have been numerous reports of the Note 7 catching on fire.

Samsung earlier this week warned customers to turn off the device. The company also said it would no longer produce the device.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has also issued a recall alert.
