PREVIOUS STORY: A Dundee mother and daughter were airlifted to hospitals in critical condition after being struck by an SUV as they were walking to a bus stop Tuesday, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

  • Mom, 7-year-old daughter were struck by an SUV in Polk
  • Pair was walking on road to a bus stop
  • Both airlifted in critical condition

The accident happened Tuesday at 7 a.m. on Weiberg Road near 8th Street in Dundee.

Deputies said Consuelo Cristanos, 41, was walking with her daughter, Esmeralda Garcia, 7, in the roadway. The SUV driver told deputies he did not see the mother and daughter before striking them because he was wiping condensation from his windshield. The driver immediately stopped, called 911 and rendered aid.

Neighbor Norma Gonzalez said there’s no median or sidewalk on Weiberg Road.

"You're on the road if you have to travel as a pedestrian,” she said. “We see a car coming, and we try to move to the side."

Deputies said the driver does not appear to be at fault for the accident. The two other children who were walking with Cristanos at the time were not struck.

"It's a dangerous area,” Gonzalez said.

Polk County Public Schools released a statement from Alta Vista Elementary, the school that Esmeralda attends:

"We are saddened by the news of the accident that occurred this morning, and are praying for the recovery of Esmeralda Garcia and her mother,” spokesperson Kyle Kennedy said.

As the mother and daughter fought for their lives, an eviction notice was placed on the trailer they rent. The timing almost brought Gonzalez to tears.

“They went and posted a letter for the family to evacuate, vacate, the rental property that they're staying at,” she said. "(If there's) any way to get people to give some help, resources for the family... It's a great time of need.”

The eviction letter states the family has three days to pay $550 in back rent.
