A local man has quite the snake story to tell.

  • Tim Mokwa said snake 'popped its little head out of the corner'
  • Experts examined photos, said snake wasn't poisonous
  • Snake hasn't been seen since

A snake slithered onto the windshield of Tim Mokwa's car Monday as he was driving along U.S. 19 during rush hour.

"It just kind of popped its little head out of the corner, and I was like, 'Is a snake really popping out of my hood right now?'" Mokwa said.

Mokwa pulled over and took video and pictures.

"He's about six feet long. He’s longer than my car is wide," Mokwa said.

Mokwa thinks the snake hitched a ride under his hood to Dunedin on Saturday from Weeki Wachee, where he went kayaking.

"That's why I thought it was a poisonous snake, because we parked about 1,000 yards from a sign that said moccasin nesting area."

Florida Fish and Wildlife experts examined the pictures and said the snake is a black racer, a non-venomous snake, and a Florida native.

They said it was likely under the hood searching for food -- or trying to avoid becoming food.

The snake hasn't been seen since Mokwa pulled over in a parking lot.

"I'm assuming it crawled back under my hood," Mokwa said.

Mokwa hopes his reptile rider is reunited with nature.

"I honestly hope it's OK out here somewhere in the lake or something," he said.
