The gyrocopter that made its way onto the lawn of the US Capitol in April 2015 will be destroyed.

  • Hughes was recently released from prison

According to Capitol Police, the helicopter-like aircraft owned by Ruskin resident Doug Hughes will be destroyed in a few weeks.

Hughes, a former postman, was sentenced to four months in prison for flying the aircraft onto federal property. He finished his sentence earlier this month.

Hughes, 63, said he pulled the stunt to call attention to the influence of money in politics and protest government corruption. He carried letters to all 535 members of Congress with him during his flight.

For violating federal airspace, he agreed to plead guilty to operating a gyrocopter without a license and forfeit the gyrocopter.
