A Lutz man was killed early Thursday in a single-vehicle crash on Lutz Lake Fern Road.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Maxwell Trent Holloway, 26, was driving his 2008 Dodge Charger westbound just before 2:30 a.m. when he went off the road. 

Holloway was an All-State high school football player at Jefferson High School in Tampa and also played at Boston College and for the Tampa Bay Storm. Holloway's father Brian is a former NFL lineman who played for the Patriots and Raiders in the 1980s.

Deputies said Holloway failed to negotiate a curve, went off the road and hit a utility pole. The vehicle then went through a ditch and struck several trees. 

The car ended up on its roof in the backyard of a home. 

There were no injuries to anyone in the home. 

The crash closed Lutz Lake Fern Road near Heritage Harbor Parkway for several hours.

The crash remains under investigation.
