A 75-year-old man was killed late Tuesday afternoon when he was struck by a vehicle in Winter Haven.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened on Lake Alfred Road near Carroll Drive.
The sheriff's traffic unit said William Sylvester of Winter Haven was killed when he stepped into the path of an SUV just before 7 p.m.
Investigators said the driver of the 2005 Buick Rendezvous, 34-year-old Sarah Townsend of Winter Haven, was driving north on Lake Alfred Road at the time of the crash.
Officials said Townsend, who was not injured in the crash, was unable to avoid striking Sylvester. After hitting him, she stopped to call for help and render aid.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing.
