  • Pamela Moreira cares for her 90-year-old father
  • Her family uprooted from New York so she could care for her parents

Pamela Moreira, 60, spends her days with her 90-year-old dad Thomas Bosch. Bosch is a veteran, former jockey and police officer now suffering from Dementia and Alzheimer’s.

“They raised us and gave to us for so many years, it was time for me to give back,” said Moreira.

Moreira visited her mom and dad four years ago when her mom was ill. “I was supposed to be here 10 days to vacation and see what I can do." 10 days turned into a month. That’s how long it took Moreira and her husband to make the decision to uproot from upstate New York, leaving behind jobs to be in Holiday.

Now she has a 24-hour unpaid job. “I just needed to take care of my father and mother, I needed to make sure that their care and needs were taken care of." So much so that she was recently recognized by the Academy of Florida Elder Law Attorney’s with an award for Caregiver of the Year.

“It's the toughest job that you're ever going to be able to do, and I don't think that people recognize that enough," said social worker for Gulfside Hospice, Ashley Monteith.

A tough job, but one Moreira wouldn’t replace.
