The Christmas holiday rush is on.

Passengers are set to brave the hustle and bustle at airports and on roads starting Wednesday. That includes Tampa International Airport where officials anticipate more than a million travelers will move through the facility between today and Jan. 2.

Travel experts say a total of six million Americans will take to the skies during the holidays.

Meanwhile, on the highways, Triple AAA anticipates more than 93 million people will be traveling by car. That's a 1.5-percent increase since last year.

Tampa International traffic is mostly going to and coming from the northeast and New York City. Tampa airport officials are advising travelers to arrive early and be prepared to deal with an extra crowded airport with construction across the facility.

"What's making it feel like there's more people this year is all the construction we have going on," said Emily Nipps, Tampa International Airport spokesperson. "Obviously, we have a lot of construction walls up, it's making it feel a little bit more crowded, some of our shuttles, we only have one working right now because of construction, so we tell people, get here early if you can. We recommend getting here about 90 minutes before boarding time and we do have very short and quick security lines typically, but anytime you're traveling during the holidays it makes it a lot less stressful if you're here early."

Nipps said the airport construction is currently at its peak.

And even though the airport is only expecting about an extra 10,000 passengers from this time last year, the construction changes will make it seem much busier.
