A Hudson woman intervened when her elderly neighbor was evicted from her longtime home.

  • Angie Tyma, 89, was evicted from her longtime home
  • Her former landlord had failed to pay the mortgage
  • Neighbor Danielle Calder decided to buy the house so Tyma could stay

Neighbors in the Hudson community said Angie Tyma, 89, is a local celebrity. She's lived on Harbor Drive for 30 years.

“She's kind of like an aunt, you know, she's family," said neighbor Danielle Calder. "She's not really just a neighbor."

“She's like the mayor," added another neighbor, Cody Griffin. "I feel like she’s like what keeps everybody close, keeps everybody alive, keeps the neighborhood going."

That’s why they decided to do something. Along with others, they painted and fixed up the home the 89-year-old was evicted from.

“I actually pulled up when it was happening and he was yelling at her and cursing and she was crying," said Griffin, about when Tyma was being evicted.

Tyma was kicked out of the home after it was found the homeowner hadn’t been paying the mortgage. But Calder decided to buy the home and allow Tyma to live there.

“She's 89-years-old today, today's her birthday, but she's coming home today so that will be a nice birthday present," said Calder.

Calder surprised her Tuesday. When Tyma got out of the car with her two small dogs, Pepper and Ralphy, she did a little dance.

“It feels good to be home, really, is this what it was all about? Nobody answered the phone, nobody called me up today," said Tyma holding back tears.

And when Tyma walked in, “Oh God, it's beautiful, it's beautiful," she said.

Another surprise, all her things were moved back in.

Calder bought the home for around $160,000. She says Tyma will pay in rent what she can afford. Pasco County had been putting her up in a motel the last few weeks.
