Several people passing a crash on Interstate 4 found themselves pulling a man to safety late Sunday.

Three people jumped into action when they saw the crash just after 10 p.m. on the highway near the McIntosh Road exit. The accident happened after a 2001 GMC Sierra pickup truck left the road, overturned and its back axle hit the guard rail, causing sparks and then a fire.

Nick DeRosa pulled over and, along with two other witnesses that were already there, got the driver out of the pickup truck and pulled him to safety before the vehicle burst into flames.

"The truck was actually turning 180 degrees and the back axle of the truck sliding across the guard rail," he said. "What caught my attention was the sparks underneath the tires. I was like 'Oh God' the gas tank is probably going to rupture."

DeRosa called 911 as he arrived at the scene. Firefighters showed up moments later and put the truck fire out.

The 46-year-old driver was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries.

Troopers said alcohol was a factor in the crash and charges are pending.
