St. Petersburg Police say the Chihuly art thief may have had second thoughts or started to feel guilty when they returned the stolen art.

Whatever their reason, police say they plan on tracking them down and putting them in jail.

Surveillance video may help police make that happen. Newly released video shows the suspect approaching the Morean Art Center with a box carrying the stolen art.

“You’ll see the suspect come into view walking towards the Morean Art Center and he drops the box off. The box actually contains this stolen item here, which we found out later that morning,” said St. Pete Police Detective, Brett Mckean.

Police say they’ve collected DNA from the stolen Chilhuly glass art and have lots of video of the suspect. But they’re looking for another missing piece to the puzzle and that’s the man seen on the video standing by a limousine, talking to the suspect.

“This man is not in trouble whatsoever, this blonde-haired man who we want to try to identify so that he can come in so we can speak to him about speaking to this individual,” Mckean said.

Wayne Atherholt has worked at pretty much every museum in the Bay area, including the Morean Art Center. He said it’s pretty uncommon but he’s not surprised something like this happened.

“Each museum has different security,” Atherholt said. “And of course one of the big things during the recession when the state cut funding for the museums was things like security that end up not being up to snuff of what it should be.”

Atherholt said he has a hunch about who, or what kind of person stole the pricey art.

“You never know,” he said. “Somebody sees something that they can easily put in a handbag worth $20,000 and it becomes tempting. Usually somebody who is stealing art is an art lover or is interested in the art.”

Police said they hope to make an arrest this week and they already have a suspect. They just haven’t released who that suspect is yet.
