A San Antonio man was on his way to work when investigators say he was killed by a wrong-way driver on Interstate 275 early Friday morning.

Troopers say Eugene M. Fischer, 65, and Larry Lorenza Thompson, 47, of Tampa, both died when Thompson's Acura TL collided with Fischer's GMC Envoy SUV on the I-275 Ashley Drive ramp just after 5:30 a.m.

Fischer’s family says he was on his way to work as a security guard in Tampa when the crash happened. He planned to retire in a year. Fischer was a long-time resident of San Antonio.

“We thought we had so many more years and memories with him and now it’s over,” said Fischer’s 13-year-old granddaughter, Makenzie Fischer.

His family is shattered by his sudden death, but they also smiled a little, remembering the man they say was incredible.

“He was at my soccer game last night taking pictures, and that’s how I remember him,” Makenzie said.

Fischer was married for 44 years to his wife, Rita. He had a son and two granddaughters.

“He was very proud of you and your sister both," his son, Mike, said to Makenzie. "He loves you guys very much."

He was also a 15-year Air Force veteran.

“He would give the shirt off his back," Fischer's niece Kim Teal said. "He would do anything for you, He was just a wonderful person."

Although his loved one's hearts are broken, sharing memories of Fischer put smiles on their faces, which is what he always did for them.

“He could always make you laugh,” said Fischer’s niece, Melissa Logan. "He could always crack a joke, no matter what the situation."

The family says they hope these wrong-way driving incidents stop, because they don’t want another family to have to suffer like theirs.

“I can’t wait to see him again in heaven," Makenzie said. "I just wish he was still here."
