The city of Bradenton welcomes its new police chief, making history.

On Tuesday, Melanie Bevan was sworn into office, officially taking over the role that has only been held by men until this point.

“I am honored and humbled to stand before all of you today as I begin this next chapter of my law enforcement career,” said Bevan.

Bevan thanked everyone for the opportunity and vowed to take care of the community. She expressed her hope that the community would do the same for her department.

“I firmly believe that when a community stands behind its police department, and actively partners with its men and women, serving and protecting, that the community becomes stronger,” said Bevan.

Bevan comes to Bradenton after serving nearly 30-years with the St. Petersburg Police Department. The former Assistant Chief of Police holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, a Master’s in Public Administration, and a PhD in Organizational Leadership.

Bradenton Mayor Wayne Poston selected Bevan as the new chief out of more than 100 candidates.

“She has the skills, she has the education, she has the commitment and I’m very, very comfortable today, to be able to swear her in as the Police Chief of the City of Bradenton,” said Poston.

Bevan is taking over for Chief Michael Radzilowski, a longtime law enforcement officer, who is retiring after 13 years with BPD.

As he welcomed the new chief during the ceremony, he had a special gift and request for her.

The former chief gave her a plaque with a framed dollar bill. He said this was passed on from chief to chief over the years.

“Which brings me to what all police chiefs know, which is the first commandment of being a police chief. And, that is Melanie, though shall not speak ill of the pervious police chief, said Radzilowski.  “Congratulations.”

The former chief is staying on the job for a few days for the transition. Before the ceremony ended, Bevan expressed her gratitude for getting the job.

“I stand before you today feeling like the luckiest cop alive and I appreciate everybody for that,” she said. “Thank you.”
