If you're tired of battling downtown Tampa traffic, there's a new way to get around.

Pirate Water Taxi, docked near the convention center, is now open for business.

Troy Manthey, president and CEO, said the project has been in the works for 15 years and offers a unique way to travel.

"Our captains are going to be dressed like pirates," Manthey said. "They're going to give you a whimsical tour and narration of what the sights and sounds of Tampa are."

Besides offering an amazing view, the taxis can also help you avoid traffic. There are 13 stops that take you to different local hot spots.

"Folks can park in the less congested places of downtown and then catch the water taxi to a place such as Amalie Arena for a hockey game," Manthey said.

Locals said they're already loving their new neighbors.

"I think it's perfect," resident Michelle Ponton said. "I think it's really something that Tampa needs and it's going to be really nice, especially in the nice weather."

Added Lance Ponton: "There's nothing like being on the water, and I believe this would certainly add to people coming down here and wanting to stay and go along the river."

Owners and visitors said they think the boats will bring in even more business to Tampa Bay.

Pirate Water Taxi is open seven days a week. For schedules and ticket information, go to piratewatertaxi.com.
