Donald Trump. He’s a lot of things and he could be the next Nobel Peace Prize winner.

The emphasis should be placed on the word “could” because according to the official website for the Nobel Peace Prize, “the names of the nominees and other information about the nominations cannot be revealed until 50 years later.” So unless Trump wins this year, we won’t have confirmation for quite some time.

In order to nominate someone, you have to meet certain criteria including but not limited to being a member of a national assembly or international court.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee determines the winner and is made up of five members who are appointed by Norwegian Parliament. The five member committee typically gets hundreds of nominations. Alfred Nobel, who the prize is named after, left no explanation as to why the prize for peace was to be awarded by this committee.

We do know that Nobel was a Swedish chemist, engineer and was very passionate about the peace movement. When he died, he willed that his remaining estate pay for “prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit to mankind.”

The 2016 Nobel Peace Prize winner will be revealed in October. Ninety-six Nobel Peace Prizes have been awarded since 1901. Past winners include Martin Luther King, Jr., President Barack Obama and Mother Teresa.
