Videographer Jeremiah Johnson spends a lot of time outdoors, taking video of birds and wildlife in a lake near his workplace in Largo.

But one recent photo shoot ended up being a little more exciting than his usual tranquil scenes.

“After about 20 minutes of shooting the gators got closer together and got closer to me and I’m sitting here watching and trying to figure out what’s going on," he said.

The video he shot shows two alligators wrestling on the banks of the lake, with one gator going for the tail and the other going for the neck.

Johnson said the fight was amazing to watch.

“I was thinking, 'This is going to be the best footage I’ve ever shot,' " he said.

Johnson was sure to keep his distance.

"If it comes on this side of the tree, I'm leaving," he said he thought as he watched them fight.

He said he'll never forget the experience.

“It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be able to see those alligators interact in that fashion," he said. "And the fact that I was able to actually videotape it and record that experience...it’s something I’ll look back on frequently.”

Wildlife official Gary Morse says this is typical alligator behavior.

“Anytime the weather is warm, alligators are going to be more active," he said. "And we are getting in toward  alligator mating season which generally lasts from about the end of March through mid-June.”

Morse said those "typical" alligator fights can end with puncture wounds and even a missing tail.
