A teen and three juveniles have been charged with committing 40 vehicle burglaries in two days in Sarasota.

Sarasota Police say the burglaries took place Monday and Tuesday in three parking garages:

  • BB&T Bank, 1800 2nd Street, Sarasota
  • Hollywood 20, 1993 Main Street, Sarasota
  • Wells Fargo Bank, 1819 Main Street, Sarasota

The teen, Matthew S. Gunn, 18, has been charged with Burglary of an Occupied Structure in connection with the burglaries. The three juveniles have each been charged with Burglary of an Occupied Structure and/or Burglary to an Unoccupied Vehicle. The total number of charges is still under investigation.

Detectives say that anyone who parked in the three named parking garages on the days in question may be a victim and not yet be aware of it.  They ask that anyone who parked in those locations over the past several days report anything suspicious or unusual.

Chief Bernadette DiPino and members of the Sarasota Police Department Criminal Investigations Division will hold a press conference Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. to address the burglaries.

Anyone with information on the case should call Det. Dwayne Shellhammer at 941-954-7014 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers by calling 941-366-8477 or online at sarasotacrimestoppers.com.
