The company behind several nationally-distributed brands of pistachio nuts was forced to issue a recall after a multi-state outbreak of salmonella was linked to their product.

California-based Wonderful Pistachios issued a voluntary recall of "limited products" due to the risk of salmonella contamination. In cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the company directed retailers to pull the specified products from their shelves, as well as direct customers to not eat and to discard those products.

The company has released the information consumers need to identify whether pistachios they may already have in their homes has been recalled. Product names, UPC codes, and where to find other identifying information on the packaging can be found on their website.

Among the brand names Wonderful Pistachios sells both in-shell and shelled pistachios are Trader Joe's, Wonderful, and Paramount Farms. The brands in question have been sold throughout the United States and Canada.

The CDC reports that to date 11 cases of salmonella montevideo infection in nine states have been identified. Two people have been hospitalized thus far, but there have been no deaths.

Their investigation of the outbreak is ongoing.
