Italian luxury automaker Maserati is recalling nearly 30,000 cars.

The company said driver's side floor mats in some sedans can become stuck under the gas pedal, causing acceleration even after a driver lifts his or her foot off the accelerator.

The issue can occur when a floor mat anchor, which pins the floor mat in place, breaks, allowing the mat to move.

The floor mat problem is similar to a problem faced by Toyota in 2007, which also forced a recall.

In total, Maserati anticipates the recall will impact 28,235 cars in the United States.

The recalled Maserati cars include Quattroporte full-sized sedans, whose price points start at $107,000, and smaller Ghibli sedans, which start at $72,000, from model years 2014 through 2016.

Maserati will notify owners affected by the recall, and dealers will replace driver's side floor mats and accelerator pedals in the affected cars free of charge.

Maserati is part of Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles.
