Imagine your morning commute through Pinellas County without hitting any stoplights.  It’s what the future holds for bay area drivers, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

FDOT released video of plans for the upcoming Gateway Expressway Friday.  The $447.8 million project will add elevated toll roads from the Bayside Bridge and U.S. 19 to I-275.  Express lanes along the median of I-275 from south of Gandy Blvd to the Howard Frankland Bridge will also be built.

“They are going to take all of that traffic that normally sits on the local lanes through all of the lights, pull them up onto elevated lanes and take them exactly where they need to go,” said Bay News 9 Real Time traffic expert Chuck Henson.

Construction is tentatively slated to start in Spring 2017, and is expected to take five years to complete.
