A man who deputies said attempted to rob the owners of a Riverview liquor store was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon.

According to deputies, just after 12 p.m., a man wearing a bandana over his face and armed with a 9mm handgun tried to rob a man who was standing behind Ace Beverage Castle located at 9401 S. Hwy 301 in Riverview.

That man indicated he had nothing to give, so the suspect forced him into an office doorway inside the Ace Beverage Castle, deputies said.

Deputies said the suspect then attempted to rob the owners (father and son) of the business who were sitting inside the office.

One of the business owners, a licensed permit holder, shot the suspect multiple times with his firearm, deputies said.

The suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Joel Alberto Torres, was transported by Hillsborough County Fire Rescue to Tampa General Hospital where he died shortly after he arrived.
